Hazardous Items Information for Rail Passengers (from April 1st, 2025) (PDF)
You are responsible for bringing and keeping your personal items with you. Please note that you may be prohibited from bringing personal effects on board if there is a risk of causing transportation disruption, such as on crowded trains.
A personal item fee of ¥280 will be charged for personal items that require a fee. However, you may only bring up to two items with you. When travelling with us, please purchase a “personal item ticket” from a ticket machine and present it to a station attendant at the ticket gate.
*If you wish to purchase a personal item ticket at a station without a ticket machine, please speak to a station attendant at the station where you alight.
Items that can be brought on board for free
- Up to 2 items with a total length, width, and height of 250cm or less; a length of 2m or less; and a weight of 30kg or less.
*Exercise equipment, recreational equipment, musical instruments, and other items that exceed the length limit but can be stored in a special case or other container and carried upright can be brought on board free of charge. - Bicycles (disassembled or folded and stored in a dedicated bag)
*Electric kickboards, like bicycles, must be disassembled or folded and stored in a dedicated bag. - Wheelchairs
- Guide dogs, service dogs, and hearing assistance dogs (legally certified dogs only)
- Surfboards (stored in a special bag or container)

Items that can be brought on board for a fee
A personal item fee is required per item per ride.
- Small dogs, cats, pigeons, and other small animals (however, please observe the following rules.)
*1 The animal must be placed in a dedicated container with total dimensions (length, width, and height) of 120cm or less.
*2 The total weight of the animal and the dedicated container must be less than 10kg.

Items that cannot be brought on board
The following items cannot be brought on board.
Personal items may be inspected by train staff to ensure safe conditions on board and within the station.
- Knives (except for those packed in such a way that there is no risk of harm to other passengers)

- Stoves and burners
- Animals (except dogs and small animals that can be brought on board)
- Items that may cause harm to other passengers
- Unsanitary items and odor-emitting items
- Items that may damage the interior of the train

Platform Tickets
A platform ticket is required to enter a station for purposes other than travelling, such as to see off a passenger or to purchase items within the station.
A platform ticket does not allow you to board a train.
A platform ticket is valid only once on the same day at the station where it was purchased, and for no more than two hours from the time of entry.
*When entering a station without a ticket machine, please use a boarding station certificate issued by an IC recharge machine or a boarding station certificate issuing machine, and present it to a station attendant when exiting the station.

Notes
- If you ride a train using a platform ticket, the admission fee will not count towards your fare. You will be required to pay the fare from the boarding station to the alighting station separately.
- If your stay at the station exceeds two hours, you will be charged an additional admission fee for every additional two-hour period.
- IC card tickets cannot be used as platform tickets.
