Hodo-ji Temple was destroyed by fire in the Onin War, but Rokuoin was restored and shows its ancient form even today. It is also known as “Kyu-Omuro-Gosho”. The temple is famous for its grounds with their many highlights, its delicate, beautiful main building, and its late-blooming cherry blossoms, “omuro-zakura”.About 3 min. on foot from Omuro-Ninnaji StationAshikaga Takauji founded this temple. The temple was the Ashikaga dynasty’s funeral temple, and many shoguns are buried there. The temple has two gardens in which lay two ponds, “fuyo-chi” and “shinji-ike”, said to have been created by Muso Soseki. On the ceiling of the lecture hall is a picture of cloud and dragon done by Kano Tan'yu.About 3 min. on foot from Myoshinji StationThis is the head shrine of all Japanese Temmangu Shrines which worship the god of scholarship, Sugawara no Michizane. It is known as one of the leading picturesque places in Kyoto. In spring the ume (Japanese apricot) garden is opened to the public and in fall it is the turn of the maple garden. On the 25th of every month there is a fair, and many visitors flock to the shrine.About 5 min. on foot from Kitano-Hakubaicho StationThis shrine is dedicated to Kiyohara no Yorinari, a Confucian scholar from the late Heian period. The popular spiritual hot spot “kiyome no yashiro” (purification shrine) and the entertainment shrine in the grounds are also visited by many entertainers.Right next to Kurumazaki-jinja StationNijo-jo Castle is a flatland castle that was built as a base of the Tokugawa shogunate. Since then major repairs have been carried out on it. It has important cultural assets, including national treasure Ninomaru Palace, “Otemon” main gate and “sumi yagura” turrets, and Honmaru Palace. The garden of Ninomaru is a national designated special scenic spot.On foot or by bus from Shijo-Omiya StationFrom Randen-Tenjingawa Station, take the Subway Tozai Line to Nijojo-mae and alightHosokawa Katsumoto founded Ryoan-ji Temple. The temple’s rock garden, which is formed by fifteen stones and white sand, is very famous. The golden pavilion of the reliquary hall is famous, so the temple is called Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion).
